"Trusted Data Exchanges in Cities: From Standards to Pilots in a changing world" Workshop

April 02, 2025 - 14:00 to 18:00 (GMT+9, Tokyo)

I wish to register to this event

The workshop aims to explore and promote the practical implementation of trusted data exchanges in cities, focusing on semantic interoperability, digital identities, and dataspaces as key enablers for smart cities.
By linking standards such as the ongoing work of ETSI on digital identities and data solutions, and the emerging dataspaces promoted by Japan’s Digital Agency, the session will:
  • Provide a deep dive into the adoption of key standards for data exchange across borders, particularly in urban environments.
  • Explore the opportunities and challenges in creating trusted data ecosystems that allow cities to securely share and leverage data for public services, infrastructure management, and citizen engagement.
  • Bridge the gap between European and Japanese approaches to trusted data exchanges, examining collaboration opportunities and sharing pilot projects.
  • Facilitate discussions on pilot initiatives that are aligning with the global shift towards data spaces and digital transformation in urban settings.

Target audience

This workshop will engage a diverse audience, including:
  • Policy Makers: From both Europe and Japan, focusing on smart city governance, digital transformation, and international collaboration.
  • Industry Experts: Specifically, those working in the domains of urban data management, IoT, cybersecurity, digital identity management, and digital infrastructure.
  • Academia: Researchers and scholars working on urban informatics, semantic technologies, and standardization efforts related to smart cities.
  • Technologists & Developers: Building platforms, tools, and solutions that support data exchange, including software solutions leveraging ETSI NGSI-LD, digital identities, and dataspaces.
  • Public Sector Officials: From municipal governments who are driving the implementation of smart city initiatives, focusing on secure and trustworthy data exchange frameworks.

Draft agenda

Over the 4 hours session, 7 to 8 pitch presentations will be made. They will be organized to contribute to concretely converge toward the session objectives. Room for discussions will be provided all along the sessions.
The detailed agenda will be shared closer to the event date.

Expected outcomes

  • Identification of Key Challenges: Highlight the practical challenges and barriers in the adoption of standards (NGSI-LD, digital identities, dataspaces) for trusted data exchanges, with a focus on risks and disaster management in cities.
  • Collaboration Framework: Lay the foundation for future collaborations between Europe and Japan in the development and deployment of pilot projects related to data spaces and semantic interoperability.
  • Actionable Insights for Pilot Projects: Provide concrete examples and lessons learned from current pilots in both Europe and Japan, offering participants guidance on how to initiate and scale trusted data exchange pilots in their cities.
  • Policy Recommendations: Deliver a set of policy recommendations for aligning efforts on digital identity frameworks, semantic interoperability, and data governance to accelerate the realization of data-driven smart cities.

Methodology

To steer discussions, a focus on risks and disaster management in cities will be made.  Data management is a vital part of tackling urban disaster management, especially as cities continue to grow and face increased vulnerability to various hazards. By leveraging data analytics, real-time monitoring, and predictive modeling, cities can better prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Collaboration, effective communication, and technological integration are key to ensuring data can be used efficiently in risk and disaster management strategies.

Speakers

The speaker lineup will consist of thought leaders, technologists, and policymakers from both Europe and Japan, who have deep expertise in the areas of data exchanges, digital identities, and smart city frameworks.
The list of speakers will be shared closer to the event date.
